Uwajima city is located in Ehime Prefecture, on Shikoku the smallest of the four main islands of Japan. It faces Bungo Channel that separates Kyushu from Shikoku.Shikoku is south of Honshu island, with the Inland Sea in between; and it is the only island with no volcanoes. In 1945 the centre of the city was largely destroyed by bombing. However, post-war reconstruction was remarkable, and the city (population just 87,000) recovered admirably. The Uwajima castle is also a great place to visit, well known as one of the twelve Japanese castles to still have an original wooden donjon (keep, dungeon) built in the Edo Period in 1596.

Being a coastal city, Uwajima supports fishing and pearl cultivating. It is one of the top pearl producers in Japan. Local specialties include Taimeshi (a dish of rice and sea bream) and Jakoten (fish cake). The waterfront around the city offers great coastal scenery. Uwajima is the home of the Date Municipal Museum, which houses heirlooms of the once-powerful Date clans who ruled the region during the 15th and 16th centuries. View samurai armour, swords, and dressing sets from the Edo era. The city is also known for bull fighting events staged five times a year.

Taga Shrine is an unusual fertility shrine marked by a large phallic symbol, and next to the shrine is a graphic sex museum, filled with artefacts from around the world. Tsushima is also a part of the city, and comprises a number of small villages known for fish and pearl farming. Here you will also find Nanrakuen Park, a beautiful place with Playland, a children’s amusement area across the street. You could also visit Tensha-en, a traditional Japanese garden constructed between 1863 and 1866, and the Uwatsuhiko Shrine, which dates back to 792.
