Cruises visiting Sendai & all Sendai cruises for  2019

View Sendai 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 1 cruises from Sendai with today's best deals!

Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region of Japan's Honshu island. Following World War II, the city has been rebuilt. Sendai has been subject to several major earthquakes and a tsunami including two this century. The Hirose River flows through the city of one million people. Very well worth a visit is the Aoba Castle site close to the river where, despite the damage by firebombing of Sendai during WW II, sections of the castle survived. Since then a great deal of it has either been rebuilt or is currently being rebuilt. The castle site also contains a Gokoku Shrine as well as a large equestrian statue of Date Masamune, the city’s founder in 1600.

The main avenues around the city are wide and tree-lined, giving the city an almost European feel. Indeed, the city has the nickname City of Trees. It is also a city of festivals that attract millions of visitors. The Sendai Loople Bus is a great way to get around Sendai and see the sights. The absolute must-see is the Miyagi Museum of Art, set in beautiful gardens, home to a vast range of magnificent art and also some amazing sculptures. Then there’s the Rinno-ji historic temple that is absolutely the best temple in Sendai. Despite the many stairs, it is a photographer’s paradise for those who appreciate old temples with plenty of character and interesting people.

The recently restored Osaki Hachiman Shrine is an impressive structure. The main building is uniquely covered in black lacquer, gold leaf and other brilliant colours. There are many sites outside the city worth visiting – hot springs, waterfalls, cliff formations and petrified forest to name a few. Matsushima, located about 40 minutes away by local train, is a bay full of tiny pine-covered islands and is recognized as one of the three most beautiful views in Japan.
