Okayama is the capital city of the Prefecture of the same name, located in the western part of the island of Honshu in Japan. Its port lies on Lake Kojima, that enters the north side of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, which separates the major islands of Honshu and Shikoku. Twenty-five kilometres south of Okayama is the Great Seto Bridge that spans about 10km of waterway. Okayama is on a line of the Japanese Shinkansen high-speed rail network. Surrounding the city on Okayama Plain are farmlands, and within the city are industrial and commercial complexes.

Korakuen garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, is adjacent to the north side of Asahi River, 8 km north of the port. The garden is noted for its attractive ponds, rice paddies and tiny tea plantations. A short walk takes you across the river to Okayama Castle, noted for its unique black exterior. It was built in 1573, destroyed in 1945, replicated in concrete in 1966, and ranked as one of the best castles in Japan. Two of the original watchtowers remain. Sogen-ji, a large Buddhist monastery belonging to the Rinzai sect, is located about 5 km east of the Castle.

Another must-see is Kibitsu-inja shrine, which includes the important cultural property the Kita-suishin-mon Gate, as well as other historical structures. There are also many Museums in the city including the Okayama Orient Museum and the Hayashibara Museum, known for its splendid collection of more than 4,000 pieces of Oriental furniture, swords, and Japanese costumes from different time periods. Endowed with abundant natural beauty, including the islands in the Seto Inland Sea, and mild climate with low rainfall, you are sure to enjoy your visit to Okayama, not surprisingly often called “The Sunny Country”.
