Amami Oshima is one of the small Satsunan Islands in the far south of Japan, between Kyushu and Okinawa. It is part of the Ryukyu Archipelago that lies as a chain from the main islands of Japan to Tawiwan. The population of Amami Oshima is just 73,000, most of whom live in the port city of Amami. The island has a humid subtropidcal climate and lies in the typhoon belt. The island is of volcanic origin, with highest peak Yuwandake 605m. One ninth of the island is within the borders of the Amami Gunto Quasi-National Park. The economy is based on agriculture and commercial fishing. Sugar cane, rice and sweet potatoes are grown, which are also the ingredients for local distillation into shochu.

Seasonal tourism is important, and local handcrafts include the production of high quality hand-crafted silk. (There are 400 factories in Amami City.) The sea surrounding the island is crystal clear and famous for diving. On land the beautiful forests are the main attraction. Most of the island is forested, with significant mangroves along the rivers, and many accessible white-sand beaches.

In Amami City visit the Amami Museum, Tanaka Isson Historical House, and the numerous parks. Be sure to visit Amami Park, which includes the Amami Museum and the Tanaka Isson Memorial Art Museum. Tanaka (1908-1977) is noted for his flower-and-bird paintings of the Amami Islands, where he spent the last 20 years of his life. His art is compared to that of Gauguin. As you enter or leave Amami port, look out for the lonely white Kasarizaki Lighthouse sitting on a small rock island.
