Nakagusuku is a village (population 20,000) on the island of Okinawa, one of the southernmost islands of Japan. In recent years, Okinawa has become an increasingly popular destination for tourists from China and Southeast Asia. Its port is an alternative to cruise ports in Okinawa (City) and the capital Naha, and is now attracting cruise ships from mainland China (Shanghai is 800 km to the NW). Nakagusuku is an agricultural farming village, with its staple crop being sugar cane. It is also famous for its almost white carrots, which are a point of civic pride.

The hilltop Nakagusuku Castle, now in ruins, is one of a number of castles built on the island of Okinawa by the Ryukyu Kingdom. The legendary Ryukyuan commander, Gosamaru built the fortress in the early 15th century. The ruins are regarded as one of the 100 most famous castle sites in Japan, and offer excellent views of the surrounding villages and ocean. It is recommended to combine a visit to Nakagusuku Castle with a visit to nearby Nakamurake, a beautiful, traditional Okinawan style residence from the 18th century.

Other interesting sites to visit are: Asado House is a traditional Okinawan house; the 00-year old Big Tropical Almond Tree; the Three (Banyan) Trees of Isshado planted around 1600; the Mermaid Statues that overlook the beach at Kuba, a photo spot for tourists; and Yoshinoura Park. The more athletic may book ahead for a paragliding experience. Okinawa has been the setting for: Teahouse of the August Moon, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, The Karate Kid Part II, and Hacksaw Ridge.
