Yakushima is an island bout 25km in diameter off the SE coast of Kyushu, 60km south of Kyushu Island and the major port of Kagoshima. It lies at the northern end of the island chain of Ryukyu. The majority of the island is within the borders of the Kirishima-Yaku National Park, and is known for its evergreen conifer Japanese red-cedars that grow to 70m. Eighteen kilometres to the east is the island of Tanegashima, home to the Japanese Space Centre. Periodic rocket launches from Tanegashima can clearly be seen from Yakushima.

Yakushima's unique remnant of ancient forest has been a natural World Heritage Site since 1993, and in its core area no records of past tree-cutting can be traced. With six mountain peaks over 1,800 m in height, the island’s other name is ‘The Alps on the Ocean'. The influence of the climate and air masses is very complex, and the main feature of this area is that temperature and seasonal changes are the largest on earth. Hence it is possible to see plants from both subtropical zones and cold temperate zones on the island.

There are several waterfalls on the island, including on the SW coast Ooko-no-taki, which is justly rated as one of Japan's best. Hire transport to the 90m falls which are easily accessible, just a short walk from the main highway. Visitors can approach the base for a good view, while those wanting to get closer and wetter can scramble over boulders to the plunge pool. Other places of interest include: the Yakushima Fruit Garden with its hundreds of tropical fruit trees and plants, and healthy eating and drinking; and the Yakusugi Museum, which has photos, movies and hands-on exhibits.
