La Spezia is a city and province in the Liguria region of northern Italy, located between Genoa and Pisa on the Ligurian Sea. With the Leaning Tower of Pisa being an absolute 'must-see', there are nevertheless many other interesting sights to be enjoyed. It is also the point of departure for the Cinque Terre, but you could visit other surrounding towns such as Lerici with its beautiful beaches. Don’t miss the ancient city of Pontremoli with its famous cathedral and its bell tower that dominates the city's skyline, and where you can examine many valuable sculptures and paintings.

In La Spezia itself there are beautiful churches such as the 13th C Church Our Lady of the Assumption, which now carries many famous religious works of art, an interesting variety of museums, the restored St. George Castle, delightful public gardens, as well as the futurist mosaic inside the Post Office. There are also many mineral springs in the surrounding mountains that many find most inviting. Museo Amedeo Lia is a fine-arts museum in a restored 17th C monastery. It is regarded as La Spezia's star cultural attraction. Also on show are Roman bronzes and ecclesiastical treasures, such as Limoges crucifixes and illuminated musical manuscripts.

La Spezia is home to Italy's largest naval base. The city’s winding streets of the old town are atmospheric and there are plenty of cosy trattorias showcasing the Ligurian table at its best. La Spezia's bustle peaks annually on 19 March, the feast day of the city's patron saint, San Giuseppe (St Joseph). Celebrations see a giant market fill the port and surrounding streets, and the naval base (off-limits the rest of the year) opens to the public. An assortment of local archaeological artefacts from prehistoric to medieval times are displayed at the city's hilltop fortifications, the Castello di San Giorgio.
