The port of Piombino is an Italian town of 35,000 inhabitants in the province of Tuscany, on the west coast of Italy and 200 km north of Rome. It has an ancient historical centre, derived from the time in which it was the Etruscans' port, in the surroundings of Populonia. After Napoleon's final defeat and the congress of Vienna, the state of Piombino was annexed by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. It became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy in 1860. The castle dates back in the thirteenth century, while the fortress was added in mid-1500 by Cosimo de' Medici.

The whole complex had several transformations over the centuries, even structural changes. After 1861 the castle and the fortress were used as a prison. A long restoration that ended in 2001 permitted the recovery of the 16th century original building. Today, here is established the Museum of the Castle and the City. The museum is quite small but interesting. Request a guided tour, which is probably the best way to see it, especially if one wishes to fully grasp the complex history of the building and the town of Piombino.

Continuing your walk through the city, you cannot miss the Town Hall and the adjacent Clock Tower. Graceful and impressive, the buildings were restored in 1900. On the first floor of Town Hall is the tourist information office, where you will pick up some useful suggestions, and perhaps the help of a free guide. High on a picturesque sea cliff is Piazza Bovio, with a wide balcony and a stunning view of Elba Island 10km to the SW. On clear days you also see the islands of Montecristo, Giglio, Capraia and Corsica, and to the right the promontory of Falcone.
