Porto Cervo is the main centre of the famous Costa Smeralda, known for its terrific beaches, on the northern shores of the Italian island of Sardinia. It is also renowned for being home to some of the largest luxury yachts in the world. A place where the wealthy flock to the posh hotels, it is the centre of numerous delightful beaches that are easily reached. Keep in mind that while 'in season' there are numerous fancy restaurants and shops in which to while away the time. In Winter many are closed, but this is, in itself, a real attraction to many visitors.

Take the time to visit a few of the surrounding areas, such as the port of Santa Teresa di Gallura, a delightful, relaxed, unpretentious and friendly little town. Also worth looking out for are the church of Stella Maris and the nearby rock formations. The village is located at the southern and eastern shore of the natural port, where there are shops, a newsagent, bars, restaurants and supermarkets. The other shores of the bay boast the old and the new marina. At the latter is the club house of the exclusive Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The end of the new marina holds a shipyard capable of repairing large luxury yachts.

Various types of sailing are the most popular activities, but travelers also enjoy windsurfing, parasailing, scuba diving and snorkelling during their Porto Cervo vacations. Once an exclusive retreat for the crème de la crème of society, Porto Cervo is still one of the world’s most luxurious resorts, but thanks to the 2004 opening of an airport in nearby Olbia, you don’t have to own a megayacht to holiday there. You do, however, need to realise this is definitely not a backpack-and-Eurail Pass destination. Designer boutiques, luxury spas, fine restaurants and exclusive nightspots abound.
