Cruises visiting Otranto & all Otranto cruises for  2019-2020

Otranto is a town on the east coast of the ‘heel’ of Italy, Salento Peninsula in the province of Lecce. It has a small harbour facing the Strait of Otranto that connects the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea, and that separates Italy and Albania (just 75 km apart). Five kilometres to the SE of Otranto is the lighthouse Faro della Palascìa, that marks the most easterly point of Italy, on the 'heel' of the Italian mainland. Otranto was a town of Greek origin, but over the centuries its strategic location has seen it come under Roman, Byzantine, Turkish and French rule.

Historical sites can be seen by visitors today. The Castello Aragonese (around 1490) has towers, moat and draw-bridge. Try to take the underground tour. Hidden up winding alleys within the old part of town is the little Byzantine Chiesa di San Pietro. Also, visit the Cathedral dating from 1088 with its mosaic floor, and the bones of 813 martyrs displayed in a glass case behind the altar. Nearby are various monasteries and catacombs. Walk around the town – from the port, it’s less than one kilometre in any direction – and along the walled waterfront. Spend time shopping along the narrow lanes and past artisan shops, and you’ll find many delightful restaurants.

From above the town just look out to sea and take in its beauty. On a clear day it is possible to see over the Strait of Otranto to Albania. Just a few minutes by walk from the centre of Otranto there are two beaches: a smaller one near Via Punta and a longer one closer to the historical centre. The fertile region south of Otranto is famous for its breed of horses and offers a unique equestrian experience, recently voted highly for horse riding activities in Europe by Lonely Planet members.
