Corigliano is a commune and town located on the Gulf of Taranto in the province of Cosenza, in Calabria, southern Italy. It is situated near the mouth of the river of the same name, and is supplied with fresh water by an aqueduct. The distinctive town is built in the form of an amphitheatre on the side of a steep hill, the summit of which is crowned by a fine feudal castle, with massive towers and a deep moat. The views from the castle are truly magnificent.

The harbour has a large fishing fleet and serves as a major port for the region. In ancient times Calabria was referred to as the land of wine, so one can visit vineyards that have origins dating back to the ancient Greek colonists. The Olden Time Cafe provides great food and an opportunity to chat with the locals. In the commune are the ruins of the ancient city of Thurii that became an ally of Rome and was pillaged in 204 BC by Hannibal.

Rome revived the colony in 193 BC, but it did not thrive. Visited by many is the city of Sybaris, that was founded in 720 BC by Achaean and Troezenian settlers. Not surprisingly, there are many architectural places of interest to explore in the surrounding areas. A wonderful place to eat is the restaurant La Corte Trattoria & Pizzeria, that is hidden away but well-worth finding. The staff are very friendly, and the pizzas ‘to die for’.
