Eskifjordur is a village and port in eastern Iceland with a population of just over one thousand. Straight across from the village is the mountain Holmatindur, almost a thousand metres in height, which is considered by the locals to be one of the most naturally beautiful in the area. Like most inhabited places in this country, the villagers here mostly make their livelihood by fishing. In commemoration of the mariners who drowned, is a sculpture located along the main road. Eskifjordur has one of the most beautiful rare stone collections in Iceland, with thousands of polished, cut and original stones from all over the island, at Soren's and Sigurborgar Rare Stone Collection.

Be sure to visit the Maritime Museum, a small but very fine museum that shows how this industry has developed. Located in a beautiful old building dated from 1819 at the east of the village, the museum is open only in summertime. Also of interest here would be the old silver-mine, located at Helgustodum, as well as the old mine where Iceland Spar was mined for almost four centuries until the first part of the 20th century. Immerse yourself in ethereal panoramic landscapes and breathe in the pure mountain-air of this unspoiled land.

Whether it’s cool and creative culture, or mesmerizing vistas and adventure you seek, Iceland is where you’ll find it. In south-east Iceland, Glacier jeeps – with 4WD - or a big wheeled monster truck offer tours to Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. Also popular, is Litlanesfoss, regarded as the prettiest set of waterfalls in Iceland. The trip is definitely worth the final hike, as there's a parking place and a map of the trail next to the road. Also popular is visiting Fransmenn a Islandi, which despite being a small building, causes visitors to suddenly find themselves firstly below deck and then on the deck of an old schooner out in the ocean.
