Djupivogur, a town (pop. 400) with a history of trading since 1589, lies on the east coast of Iceland in a region of incomparable natural beauty. The nearby lagoon, the Vatnajokull icecap and a range of glacial tongues feature some of Iceland's most famous scenery. Located on the south side of the Berufjorour fjord, the village also offers easy access to Vatnajokull, the biggest glacier in Europe, and East Iceland. If possible, visit the town of Hofn that features a Glacier Exhibition. The Bulandsnes bird sanctuary, where visitors can observe most Icelandic birds nesting in their natural habitat close by, is renowned amongst bird-lovers throughout the world.

The oldest houses (1788-1818) date back to the Danish period. Three of them, among them Langabud (1790), have been restored. Langabud is now the cultural centre of the town. It houses a museum for Ríkharour Jónsson the sculptor, as well as a gallery for local crafts and a coffee shop with delicious homemade cakes and a display of local handicraft. Djupivogur certainly welcomes visitors and tourists with its pretty harbor and historic buildings. The towering mountain Búlandstindur at 1069 m dominates the landscape. The mountain is pyramid-shaped and many believe it to be a source of cosmic power.

Don’t miss the outdoor sculpture, Eggin i Gledivik, consisting of 34 eggs, located on the coast about one kilometre from the centre of the village. Another popular venue for visitors is the restaurant at hotel Framtío. There is also the opportunity to enjoy a round of Icelandic golf. Other activities include deep sea angling and boat voyages, as well as nature walks and bicycle rides through the beautiful, mysterious and geologically fascinating mountains and fjords in the vicinity. Seal-watching tours are also popular. Djupivogur presents some of the best views of the district.
