Porbandar, in India, is best known as the birth place of Mahatma Ghandi, the father of the Nation. It is a picturesque sea port on the Arabian Sea on the west of India. Fishing is a major employer, and along this coast are some of the remaining sites if the marine mammal dugong. Now it is a city of industry, with cement and chemical factories ringing the city. Tourism associated with Ghandi is significant. The most fascinating features of this planned city are its architecturally impressive buildings of white stone structures and rich carvings.

One can visit the residence, now an important museum, of Mahatma and his wife Kasturba at Kirti Mandir. The area around his home has become a temple of peace. Two km from the middle of town is Bharat Mandir, with exhibits of sculptures, pictures and other examples of Indian tradition. Next door is the Nehru Planetarium, with regular programs about astronomy. Visit many other public heritage buildings of the colonial period, such as the Public Library and Raj Mahal, which is now a college. The Sudama Temple, important to Hindu mythology, Darbargadh Palaces, and the three storey summer pavilion built amidst sprawling gardens, Sartanji Choro, are all worth visiting.

Huzoor Palace built by the last ruler of the Princely State of Probandar, Rana Natwarsinhji, in the early 20th C, stands near the sea shore at Marine Drive in the city. Porbandar's beach, locally known as Chowpati, has a long sandy expanse along the ocean. Stroll along the shores where you may spot the flamingos and other delightful sea birds. Enjoy seeing the incredible illustrations of great Indian men at Bharat Mandir, or go on a shopping spree at the 'White City', renowned as a centre for gold and silver trinkets and fine quality silk and cotton.
