Karaikal is a deep-water port town on the east coast of southern India, facing the Bay of Bengal. It is located 115 km north of Sri Lanka. The French government acquired Karaikal as a colony in 1674, until 1954 when it was returned to the Republic of Indian. [French India included Pondichéry, Karikal and Yanaon on the Coromandel Coast (facing the Bay of Bengal), Mahé on the Malabar Coast (on the west coast of India facing the Arabian Sea), and Chandernagor in Bengal (to the north of the Bay of Bengal).] Tamil is the predominant language, spoken in southern India and northern Sri Lanka. Some of the older generation still speak French.

Karaikal has a strong industrial sector, along with commerce, agriculture, and fishing, the latter from hamlets along the coast. Karaikal is known for its diverse religious heritage – Hindus, Muslims, and Christians – and is a destination for those seeking leisure and serenity. Karaikal is known all over the country for its unique and the only temple devoted to the Lord Saneeswara (Lord Saturn) at Thirunallar. Karaikal is the Gateway to various places of worship in the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu. Two famous shrines, Velankanni for Christians and Nagore for Muslims are nearby Karaikal.

So 99 percent of the tourist destinations relate to religious sites and architecture. Also, in Karaikal are many French-style buildings. Hotel Sri Kandaas is a quite famous restaurant. Thirteen kilometres to the north is Tharangambadi, an ancient Danish colony with remains of its 17th C fort Interestingly, Tamils were among the first peoples who cultivated rice, and here is the most important rice-growing region of the state of Tamil Nadu. Traditionally, the Tamils sit on the ground and the food is served on a banana leaf, and food is eaten with the right hand.
