The old city is situated on a rocky hill of about 35 m. Its harbor, the only natural one between Mount Carmel (port of Haifa) and the border of Egypt, is formed by a low ledge of rocks about 100 m from the coast. Cruise ships more commonly berth at Haifa (90km north) or Ashdod (30km south).
