Tel Aviv is Israel’s second largest city (pop. 433,000) located on the Mediterranean coast. The city was founded in 1909 by Jewish immigrants on the outskirts of the ancient port city of Jaffa, about 55 km WNW of Jerusalem. Modern Yafo (Arabic, Jaffa) merged with Tel Aviv in 1950 two years after the establishment of the State of Israel, and is now Tel Aviv-Yafo. The old city is situated on a rocky hill of about 35 m. Its harbor, the only natural one between Mount Carmel (port of Haifa) and the border of Egypt, is formed by a low ledge of rocks about 100 m from the coast. Cruise ships more commonly berth at Haifa (90km north) or Ashdod (30km south).

Tel Aviv is the financial and technological centre of the country, “Wadi Silicon”. Tel Aviv's White City, a World Cultural Heritage site, consists of 4000 buildings in the unique International Style from the 1930s. During hot weather residents take to the streets, to the coffee shops, cafés and nightlife. Predominantly Jewish, Tel Aviv is ethnically diverse. Rothschild Boulevard begins in fashionable Neve Tzedek and is an attraction for tourists, businesses and startups. It features a wide, tree-lined central strip with pedestrian and bike lanes. Older suburbs are being revitalised, and the city’s architecture is quite varied – Art Deco, classical, Orientalist, European, Bauhaus and modernist – with many new skyscrapers.

Tel Aviv is a major centre of culture and entertainment, museums, fashion, parks, and beaches. On offer are bus, architectural, Segway, cycling and walking tours. Do walk along the popular Shore Promenade. Other places of interest include Azriely Lookout to see the entire city, Rabin Square, and Old Jaffa. In Biblical times Jaffa (Joppa) was: King Solomon’s commercial port; received timber from Lebanon for Jerusalem’s temple construction; where Jonah set sail; where Peter resurrected Dorcas, and left to meet the Gentile Cornelius.
