Bantry Bay is located in County Cork in Ireland. From the far SW of Ireland, the elongated inlet reaches 35km to the NE. Bantry and the Harbour are about 30km inside the entrance. In front of Bantry Harbour is Whiddy Island, the main petroleum terminus for Ireland with its deep harbour. The town of Bantry was the intended landing point of a French fleet in 1796 to support the United Irishmen under Theobold Wolfe Tone. The square in Bantry is today named after him. There’s the Betelgeuse memorial in St Finbarr’s Church graveyard overlooking the Harbour, which commemorates the disastrous end of the French oil tanker Betelgeuse at Whiddy Island in 1979.

The port was home to commercial mackerel and pilchard fisheries of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and today offers a mixture of modern and traditional architecture. First off, call at the Bantry Tourist Office for ideas on what to do on the day you arrive. See the Water Wheel at the town’s library, and busy Friday markets on the square. You will surely visit Bantry House, a stately 18th C mansion set in formal gardens on the southern shore of the harbour. Take a tour through the house and gardens.

Sheep’s Head Peninsula is a distant drive, offering superb scenery and photographic opportunities. You’ll arrive at the Lighthouse (in the distance) at the far SW point of Ireland. Drive and take a challenging walk, if you can find it, to the Kealkill Stone Circle. It’s about 12km NE of Bantry – a dozen stones in a cow paddock that goes back to Ireland’s megalithic past. And there is a great view down to Bantry Bay.
