Pulau Weh or Weh Island is a small active volcanic island in Aceh Province, just off the northern tip of Sumatra. The largest city on the island, Sabang, has a deep water harbour providing a logistic hub for international vessels passing through the busy shipping route, the Malacca Strait. Islam is the main religion, as Aceh is a special province where Sharia law has been applied, exclusively for the province. Weh Island is best known for ecotourism and underwater diving. Most visitors head straight to either Gapang or Iboih beaches, 40-50 minutes from the ferry, while some go hiking through to the volcanic mountain.

Coral reef areas around the island are known for their large variety of fish species, so the Indonesian government has declared the surrounding sea, and a large area of the inland, a wildlife protection area. “kilometer 0 Indonesia” is a monument on Pulau Weh that marks the western-most point of the country. It’s very well worth visiting and taking photos. Then there’s the haven in Sabang’s harbour, with its “I Love Sabang monument,” that offers the great experiences of snorkelling and diving, and is also a place to meet local families.

Since coffee is everywhere in the special province of Aceh you need to choose the best coffee in town, the Ulee Kareng coffee. The taste of this is extremely popular especially when it’s served with condensed milk and a little sugar. You can also have your fill of sea food dishes in the restaurants throughout the island. Be aware that most visitors dress casually but are sure to respect the locals, who are mostly Muslims, and modest clothing is therefore preferred. This includes not only bringing your own bathing suit and a lock, but also any other necessary equipment.
