Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) is a group of around 130 islands in Jakarta Bay, Indonesia. The islands spread over 45 km from N to S. Speedboats from Jakarta’s Ancol Marina take minutes to two hours to reach the islands, with their white sands, palms, coral reefs, and calm waters. The further from Jakarta, the clearer the water. Most of the islands are in a Marine National Park (no fishing). There are 11 resorts with bungalows for day-trippers or longer-stayers from Jakarta. Many poor fishermen live alongside, most of them on Pulau Kelapa (Coconut Island). The islands have a population of around 15,000, with the district centre Pulau Pramuka.

Since 1610 the islands were a base for the Dutch East India Company with a naval base on Onrust Island, 5 km off the mainland from Jakarta. This island has an intriguing history, seeing battles between Dutch and British, as a Hajj quarantine station, a prison, Japanese ocupation, then as a leprosarium. In 2002 the neighbouring islands of Onrust (“Unrest”), Kelor, Cipir and Bidadari were declared an archaeological park to protect the artifacts from the time of the Dutch East India Company. Pulau Kelor has the impressive ruins of an old Dutch fort. Pulau Kelor has the remains of an 18th C shipyard. Bidadari has a Dutch-built Martello tower of 1850, though the top was blown off in the Krakatoa explosion of 1883.

Thirty-six of the islands are used for recreation, and of these 13 islands are developed. Eleven islands are homes to resorts and two islands are historic parks. Twenty-three are privately owned and are not open to the public. The rest of the islands are either uninhabited or support a fishing village. The marine park attracts divers, with 342 reef platforms and 700 individual reefs. On land are coconut palms, pandanus, mangroves, and breadfruit. At sea many species of fish, sea grasses, turtles, corals, and sea birds. The islands are actually a Regency of the city of Jakarta.
