Pare Pare is a port town located on the SW coast of Sulawesi, about 155 km north of the provincial capital Makassar. It is one of the major population centres of the Bugis people, and is possibly most famous for being the birth place of Jusuf Habibie, the third President of Indonesia. It is a hilly city with plenty of greenery, and is sometimes used as a stopover between Tana Toraja and Makassar. It is also home to several pleasant beaches such as the Mattirotasi and Bibir beaches. Visitors also thoroughly enjoy the delightful local architecture.

Pettakere cave is in the Bantimurung district of South Sulawesi. It contains paintings from prehistoric times, and is very well worth visiting. If possible, enjoy seeing the monkey forest in the National Park in Camba. Also worth visiting is Torajaland. Get to know the local traditions. Travellers say the four-and-a-half hour journey each way by the local buses, with tour operators available, is well worth-while. See the unique culture of the Toraja burial sites and graves dug into granite cliffs, and during the trip view some spectacular scenes.

Pare Pare is a very flat area where rice is growing. To the locals, these rice fields are not spectacular, but for those who are not accustomed to them, they always look beautiful and attractive. In addition they have the fascinating, colourful, people who are working on them. On the roadsides one usually find stalls where you can buy giant grapefruits that are much larger than those that visitors have back home, and are very sweet. The Indonesian government has promised to "step up" the protection of ancient cave paintings, and to place all the caves in Sulawesi on the nation's official "cultural heritage" list.
