Padang lies in the centre of the west coast of Sumatra facing the Indian Ocean. It is the capital of West Sumatra province. It is one of the cleanest cities in Indonesia, receiving the national “Adipura” award 17 times. The city has been under control of Portuguese, Dutch and British over the centuries who valued its pepper, gold, coffee, salts and textiles. Today the city of 880,00 has two universities, and many intellectual figures come from the province. The Minangkabau (“Victorious buffalo”) people of the province highly value education, their traditions, are Islamic, and a matrilineal society. Their traditional long houses curve upward from the middle to points, like buffalo horns.

Visit "Padang Old City" in Kampung Pondok, South Padang with its many heritage Dutch and Chinese buildings. Adityawarman Museum specialises in the history and culture of the local Minangkabau ethnic group. Places to see are: the Grand Mosque; Muhammadan Mosque; St. Leo Monastery; and the Buddhist Temple, Vihara Buddha Warman. Outside the city is Air Manis Beach with the Malin Kundang stone (with its interesting folklore story) that resembles a ship wreck. There are remains of Japanese armaments from WWII. Further away is the Bung Hatta Nature Reserve with diverse flora (including Rafflesia) and fauna (with Sumatran tigers and tapirs).

Get to savour their spicy Padang cuisine, spread out in small portions across a score of dishes. You pay for the dishes you empty, along with rice. The best known Padang dish is rendang, a spicy meat stew. Soto Padang (crispy beef in spicy soup) is local residents' breakfast favourite, while beef sate in peanut curry sauce is served in the evening. Tourists pass through Padang for beaches, surfing, snorkelling, and highland treks to mountains of 2500m. The city is set in an earthquake-tsunami region.
