Nias Island lies 100 km west of North Sumatera in the Indian Ocean. The 120 km long island has a population of 800,000 and is distinctive for its customs, art and buildings. Nias is located in an archipelago of 131 islands in an earthquake prone region along the Sunda Trench subduction zone. The massive 2005 Nias-Simueulue earthquake greatly affected North Nias and its capital Gunungsitoli. More than 80% of modern public buildings were destroyed. Gunungsitoli is home to Nias's only museum, the Museum Pusaka Nias (Nias Heritage Foundation), which houses over 6000 objects related to Nias's cultural heritage.

Once a megalithic head-hunting society, its economy was based on agriculture and pig-rearing. Village chiefs live in omo sebua houses, built on massive wooden piles, with steeply pitched roofs to 16 m – and are earthquake resistant. Houses in North Nias are oval in shape and built on piles; in South Nias they are built in terraces on hills forming long rows. While Nias is predominantly Christian, its people adhere to ritual customs, ancestor reverence, and spiritism.

Visitors will want to view their war dances and stone jumping, particularly at Bawomataluo village in the south, 10 km inland from Teluk Dalam. Young men jump over stone cairns up to 2.1m high in a must-see ceremony. The colourful traditional dress of men and women against a backdrop of rows of Nias timber houses draws photographers. Nias is also an internationally famous surfing destination, the best surf being on the southern tip of the island, 10km due west of Teluk Dalam.
