New Mangalore is the chief port for Mangalore (formerly Bangalore), on the Arabian Sea of India's west coast. Here a very popular venue for visitors is Panambur Beach that offers jet ski rides, camel rides, boating, dolphin viewing, and food stalls serving ice-cream and natural fruit syrups. Importantly, there are trained beach life-guards and patrol vehicles for safety and security. Most visitors to Mangalore search out its numerous temples that date back to 1068, with their delightful architecture and detailed carvings. These include: the Kadri Manjunath Temple described as a peaceful haven for tourists; the Magaladevi Temple just 3km to the SW of the city centre; and the Manjunatha Temple with its outstanding bronze statue.

Also well worth visiting are the St.Aloysius Church, with its walls covered in paintings by an Italian artist, and the nearby College chapel, which has been compared to the Sistine chapel in Rome. Also of great interest to many are the three dedicated International Technology Parks. Then there’s the Sultan Battery, the remains of which today give the impression of a miniature fort designed to house cannons. Also of interest to many are the many local dances that include the unique Tiger Dance, and the Yakshagana, a night-long dance and drama performance, to name just a couple.

As the city abounds with fairs and festivals be sure to check what might be celebrated at the time you are visiting. Something that must be tried is the local cuisine, with several dishes unique to the city. Also not to be missed is its well known coffee and cashew nuts. Don’t forget to visit the ‘Ideal Ice Cream Parlour’ with its variety of sumptuous ice cream. Mangalore has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.
