Belawan is a port city on the NE coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. As Medan, the third largest city in Indonesia, is located on the Deli River just 25 km away, many passengers visit this city. The area of special attraction would have to be Lake Toba, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. Lake Toba was formed during a volcanic eruption millions of years ago, an eruption that some anthropologists believe killed most of the surrounding animal population. This epic crater-lake is an absolute ‘must see’ for anyone who visits Medan.

While in Medan, many also take the opportunity to visit the Great Mosque and the Palace of the Sultan of Deli, while families may well enjoy visiting the Hill Park Green Hill City, the latest theme park just one hour away from Medan. Medan hosts a number of attractive Art Deco buildings from the Dutch colonial era, like the Old City Hall, the Post office, and many business buildings, in and around Jl. Ahmad Yani. Some of them are in disrepair, but most of them maintain their old splendour.

Other places of interest to visitors are: The Buddhist temple Vihara Borobudur, the Chinese temple Bihara Gunung Timur, and the Mesjid Raya. Also worth visiting if time permits, are the Tondi Gallery that features contemporary works by local artists, the Catholic Shrine with Tamil Hindu-style architecture, and the Tamil Hindu temple Shri Mariamman. As there is no single ethnic group forming a majority, each ethnic group contributes to thousands of tasty, mouth-watering dishes found in every corner of Medan.
