Kalocsa is a town in Bacs-Kiskun county, Hungary, approximately 120 km south of Budapest. It is one of the oldest towns in Hungary with several buildings from the 18th Century. Amongst its historical buildings are a fine cathedral, and the archiepiscopal palace - both from the 18th C - as well as an astronomical observatory, a seminary and colleges, all of which attract visitors. Today this picturesque little town is surrounded by a delightful succession of sand-dunes, untouched meadows, a truly natural environment, reed beds, aquatic life thriving in tranquil oxbow lakes, tiny whitewashed farms, tended pastures and swaying fields of wheat that make up a unique sight for travellers.

The symmetrical and solid facade of the Baroque palace, also well known for its fascinating entrance gate, has a library that houses120,000 precious works that includes a Bible which belonged to Martin Luther. It also has frescoes created by a famous Austrian artist. The Baroque cathedral, built between 1735 and 1754, has an atmosphere of absolute serenity throughout the pale pink and gilded stucco interior. Sacerdotal robes, liturgical objects and a silver and gold bust of St Stephen that weighs 50 kg, are on display in the archbishop’s treasury. The cathedral is also home to a crypt where a famous archbishop is said to be buried.

The Museum of Paprika, as its name suggests is devoted to the history of paprika, its arrival in Hungary, how it is grown and transformed into powder and how it is used. Visitors will learn, among other interesting anecdotes, that the famous spice is dried in September and also that an Hungarian Nobel prize winner discovered vitamin C from paprika. A section of the museum is devoted to the prize winner's life.
