Skopelos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, 130 km due north of Athens. It is one of the islands in the Northern Sporades group. Skopelos is roughly 20 km by 5 km, a hilly island with three mountains rising to 681m. Skopelos is also the name of the island’s port, a heritage town lining a small bay with a breakwater and marinas for small craft. The town’s white houses topped with red clay roofs adorn the hill sides above the shops and restaurants that curve around the bay. Half a dozen towns and villages border the western shores of the island, some with marinas, others are resorts on the 17 small beaches cramped between rocky cliffs.

Fame came to the island with the filming of Mamma Mia in 2007. The wedding procession was filmed at the Agios Ioannis Chapel near Glossa. The economy is built on tourism in the summer, and year-round retirement homes. The population of the island swells from 5000 to 20,000 during tourist season. Yet (as one newspaper reported) “For many visitors it epitomises the appeal of Greece as a holiday destination — unspoilt island life; unpretentious food and accommodation; quiet beaches; walks through green, mountainous interiors; and a complete removal from the stresses of modern life.”

Take a walk around Skopelos Town, and hire a vehicle to reach inland Glossa (11 km as the crow flies). On the way you’ll pass many of the 123 monasteries on the island. All villages are connected by a zig-zag network of roads. There is no flat ground for an airport. Agriculture, with plum and almond orchards, and vineyards, is on the decline. A distinctive feature of the countryside are prune-drying ovens, scattering next to orchard cottages with their beaked chimneys. The wide range of flowers, trees and shrubs support honey production. Neo Klima on the west coast was purpose-built following the earthquake of 1965.
