Thessaloniki is the capital of Greek Macedonia, and has a history that dates back to the fourth century BC. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout, and is a hub for international trade and culture. Regarded by many as Greece’s ‘hippiest city’, the influence of the east is pronounced, both in the delicious food and the relaxed lifestyle. History-minded visitors will visit the many museums with their great displays of artefacts from, for example, Sindos and Vergina. There are also many notable Byzantine monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and several Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish structures.

There are other places of interest within the city that include the palace of Galerius, the ruins of the Roman Market and Theatre, Nymphaion, a fascinating and elegant circular building, and the Roman Baths. Also of interest are the ruins of Vergina that includes many famous tombs. Hire a car or take a taxi and visit the beautiful beaches and countryside, or simply take a delightful stroll along the waterfront. Enjoy the food at the delightful restaurants, and don't forget that Thessaloniki is famous for its high fashion industry, so is a great place for women to enjoy shopping.

Thessaloniki was also an important center for the spread of Christianity. While on his second missionary journey, the apostle Paul established the first Christian church in Europe. The city today has monuments and museums to thrill history-lovers. It is mostly walkable and has a more upbeat quality than Athens. Historic sites include Byzantine walls threading its romantic Upper Town and the imposing Rotunda. This is a city where old and new cohabit wonderfully: the Arch of Galerius, an intricate 4th-century monument, overlooks the busy shopping drag of Egnatia, while Thessaloniki’s most famous sight, the White Tower, anchors a waterfront packed with cocktail bars.
