Nafpaktos is a Medieval-style town (pop. 20,000) on the north side of the Gulf of Corinth, 3 km west of the mouth of the river Mornos. The Gulf is a deep inlet of the Ionian Sea (between Italy and Greece) that separates mainland Greece from the Peloponnese peninsula to the south. The opening to the Gulf nearby to Nafpaktos in just 2 km wide. The town wraps around a curved bay, at the centre of which is a protected marina housing about 50 small pleasure boats. Beyond the neat rows of the town’s houses are low hills, and on either side farm lands.

Nafpaktos is a surprisingly beautiful destination, like a hidden gem, a place with historical interest. Nafpaktos history goes back to c.430 BC with Greek naval wars, then later Crusades, and the Ottoman-Venetian Wars. Its position strategically controlled trade in the Gulf of Corinth. The port with its fortifications, and the large Venetian Castle overlooking the town, are the town's main attractions. Near the marina is a statue of Miguel de Cervantes who fought in the Battle of Lepanto (now Nafpaktos) in 1571, in which he lost his left hand. (You know him as the most famous Spanish author of the classic Don Quixote.)

In a short walk from the port is the tower of Botsaris, an elegant mansion in traditional style. This tower today hosts a museum dedicated to the Battle of Lepanto. The beaches each side of the marina are long and clean, with restaurants and places to relax. Less than an hour away by car you will find yourself surrounded by a forest and mountainous scenery with small streams and waterfalls along with picturesque villages. There are many monasteries, some dating from the Byzantine times.
