Limnos (Lemnos) is an island of Greece in the northern part of the Aegean Sea, lying closer to mainland Turkey than to Greece. The island’s history of conflict is very long: from pre-history, stone, bronze and iron ages; to Greek, Persian, Roman, Venetian, and Turkish rule. During WW I the island's harbour at Moudros was used by the Allies during early 1915 in support of the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign to try to capture the Dardanelles Straits, some 80 km to the ENE. The Portianos Military Cemetery, West Moudros, is the final resting place for many of the ANZACS.

It is a warm and welcoming island that is rather small and quaint, yet not tacky or touristy. The wonderful port and capital town of Myrina, with its paved alleys, stone mansions, promenade, and Byzantine Castle, comes to life every evening as the fishing fleet returns with the day’s catch, selling the fish to everyone right at they quayside. The castle offers a breath-taking view of the island, while the hot mineral spring spa at Therma is well worth a visit. Other places of interest include: the petrified forest near Moudros; the old Neolithic city of Poliochni; the archaeological site of Hephaestia; Ancient Kavirio; and the legendary cave of Philoctetes.

Limnos is famous for its feta and melipasto cheeses, and for its yoghurt. It also has some of the cleanest and sandiest beaches anywhere in the Greek islands. The best aspect of Limnos is that it is not tainted by mass tourism. It is a safe, friendly, quiet and hospitable place, ideal for family holidays, preserving its natural simplicity. Many festivals, music events and parties are organized in the summertime in true Greek tradition.
