Delos (or, Dilos), is the sacred island at the centre of the ring of about 220 islands called the Cyclades archipelago, in the Aegean Sea about 150 km SE of Athens. A few kilometres to the NE of Delos is the larger tourist-frequented island of Mykonos. According to Greek mythology Delos was the birthplace of the mythical Apollo and Artemis. It has been populated since the third millennium BC and today is historically and archaeologically very important. No other island on Earth hosts so many monumental antiquities from the Archaic, the Classical, and the Hellenistic periods. The island itself is roughly 5 km N-S, and 1.3 km E-W; quite compact.

Since the 7th C BC religious structures appeared, eventually hosting a city of 30,000 to become a large commercial port, and during Roman times a slave market. Remaining are sculptures, floor mosaics, household objects, clay figures and various works of art in a confined area open to tourists. Some of the places very worthwhile visiting are the House of Masks, a ruin that still contains some beautiful mosaics, Cleopatra's House, an ancient example of how people lived in that era, and the Temple of Isis. It's probably wise to hire a guide or take a day tour to reconnoitre the numerous buildings, theatres, spectacular views and cisterns.

There is also a museum with the statues and archaeological finds that were not taken to Athens, certainly more than enough to keep you interested. The island itself is without vegetation, and today has only about a dozen inhabitants. Excavations that began in 1872 are still ongoing, and in 1990 the site was included on the World Heritage List. Visitors are sure to remember this port, a bustling centre of historic religion and trade. One can get a sense of how rich people lived in ancient times, from their beautiful mosaics, frescos, fountained courtyards, and other house decorations.
