Kirin Greenland did a great job at organising this little get away for us and I would definitely ask Kirin again when we do more cruises in the future."

Tasiilaq (meaning “the place with a lake”, and known as Ammassalik until 1997) is a town (population 2,000) in SE Greenland, just 106 km below the Arctic Circle, and 760 km due west of Reykjavik in Iceland. It lies on the southeastern coast of Ammassalik Island, lying tightly against the mainland. The research station Sermilik is located 15 km northwest of Tasiilaq on the west coast of the island. Tasiilaq is on the shore of a natural harbour, Tasiilaq Fjord. Visitors in summer can expect a daily range of temperatures from 10 to 2 deg.C. Tasiilaq is the main location where East Greenlandic is spoken.

The township consists of a few hundred colourful buildings rising from the coast, looking out over King Oscar’s Harbour with still water and drifting icebergs. Outside town there are no roads, and transport is by helicopter and boat. Tasiilaq has a tundra climate, with long, cold and snowy winters and short, cool drier summers. From time to time Tasiilaq is affected by piteraqs, fast cold destructive winds emanating from the Greenlandic icecap. This is a hunting community, chasing seals, narwhals, walrus and polar bear. Bush walks pass mountains that rise close to 1000m, streams and lakes. Or, take a boat or kayak trip among the icebergs, and take a two-day course in dog-sledding.

Winter adventures like dog sledding, skiing, heliskiing, snowmobiling, hiking and whale watching. And of course there’s the Northern Lights. Inland from the fjord coast is the vast rising Greenland ice sheet, beyond the exposed and jagged coastal peaks. In summer (peak 23 h sunshine) the town’s small, wooden, red and blue houses (with occasional rock-and-turf houses) bring colour to the sparse landscape, which has its own special beauty. Purchase tusk and bone carvings as a memento.
