Located on the southernmost tip of Greenland, the largest island in the world, is Prins Christian Sund (Danish), 500m wide and 100 km long, with mountains either side rising 1000m above sea level. A scenic cruise through this channel is one of the world’s best day-scenes from a cruise ship. It is awe-inspiring, with its rugged beauty of narrow passages, dramatic rock formations, steep fjords, drifting ice floes, and towering glaciers marking the southern tip of the massive Greenland ice field. Passage through this channel may reveal white-beaked dolphins, and four species of whales. Hopefully the day will be sunny.

The Prince Christian Sound separates the mainland of Greenland from Christian IV Island and other islands of the Cape Farewell Archipelago. Several times every summer cruise ships, sometimes as large as the Eurodam, pass through the sound. You’ll see only one settlement, Aappilattoq, consisting of a few dozen houses and heliport ‘in the middle of nowhere’. It is in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland. The name means "sea anemone" in the Greenlandic language. The settlement had 132 inhabitants in 2010. Expect small boats with outboard motors to come out and greet you with happy smiles and waves – it is their adventure to see you!

Strong tidal currents limit the formation of ice, but you will pass ‘growlers’ from the glaciers. Greenland prides itself on having only free and wild animals in its waters, so Greenland’s whales swim wherever the krill and schools of fish lead them. That being said, some species favour certain fjords, making many places along the Greenland coast reliable havens for whale watching. As you exit the sound, unlike most other summits in the area, the almost 2,000 m peaks nearby are unglaciated, and their steep rock walls are a feature of the landscape.
