Maniitsoq is one of Greenland’s largest settlements with a population of 2700, lying 128 km south of the Arctic Circle. It is situated of the SE side of the rugged and irregular shaped, Maniitsoq Island, 10km from the mainland. The settlement lies at the mouth of a fjord world to the east, where Alpine peaks rise two kilometres straight out of the sea and there is an abundance of bird colonies, flanked by enormous glaciers. This is home to some of the harshest landscape on the west coast. The town sees water and natural canals on all sides, hence dubbed “the Venice of Greenland.”

Walk around town, and you’ll find the meaning of tis name – “The uneven place” – is appropriate. The Maniitsoq Museum, with local Greenlandic artefacts, clothing and much more, is well worth visiting. There are private boat tours that last from 4-7 hours that provide an overall picture of this unique spot. One can visit the Apussuit Adventure Camp that is the only ski centre in Greenland. Most visitors make a point of visiting the Fjord of Eternity, as it is considered to be the most beautiful fjord on the west coast of Greenland. Boat trips take you to whales year round, with their aerial acrobatics and tail whips.

Sporting options include good fishing and skiing (March to May). Helisking means taking a helicopter to the highest peak, hopping off, then meeting the helicopter at the water’s edge. Every metre counts. Pattefjeld, a mountain 570m high, stands on Maniitsoq and has a rounded summit that is very prominent.
