Nuuk is the capital and largest city of Greenland, as well as being the northernmost capital in the world, though 2 degrees south of the Arctic Circle. It’s a place where the old and the new are united in a unique and dynamic way. The missionary Hans Egede founded Nuuk in 1728 as the very first town in Greenland. The natural beauty and wildlife surrounding Nuuk is breath-taking and includes magnificent geology, whales playing in the fjord, reindeer on land, bird watching and much more. Indeed here visitors experience some of the most beautiful and fascinating Arctic nature in the world.

A short walk from the Colonial harbour with its beautiful old buildings takes visitors to the newly renovated and roof-covered market that interests many. Other attractions in the town include the award-winning cultural centre Katuaq, with a number of impressive artworks as well as theatres and a cinema, and the cathedral that dates back to1849. Then there’s the National Museum where kayaks and women's boats, amulets and costumes and the famous mummies from Qilakitsoq are located, and where visitors get the opportunity to delve into Greenland's very rich and varied history that dates back to the oldest settlements, believed to have been built some 4,200 years ago.

For the past 30 years Nuuk has been noted for its constant growth. In a unique way the town and its inhabitants have been able to adapt to the dynamic development from a traditional Greenland society to a modern industrial town. This is where the past, present and future meet - from exhibitions of old and new to experimental theatre and a modern way of life. Its northerly position, close to the Arctic Circle, results in natural phenomena such as summer’s midnight sun and winter’s Northern Lights. Most of its small population lives along the ice-free, fjord-lined coast, particularly in the southwest.
