Devil’s Island (14ha), along with Île Royale (28ha) and Saint-Joseph Island (20ha), form the Salvation’s Islands, lying 13km NE off the coast of French Guinana in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands were part of the penal colony of Cayenne from 1852 to 1953, that also included mainland sites. Most of the 80,000 prisoners never returned to metropolitan France, dying from tropical diseases and brutal conditions. Devil's island, Île du Diable, housed no more than 12 persons in moderate freedom due to the difficulty of escape. Today the two larger islands are open to the public, with some of the old prison buildings restored as museums. They receive 50,000 tourists a year.

In 1894 a French army officer Alfred Dreyfus was unjustly sent to Devil’s Island on charges of treason. The Dreyfus Affair became one of the most tense political dramas in modern French history. Famously defended by Émile Zola in the renowned newspaper headline J'accuse, Dreyfus was exonerated in 1906. Henri Charrière's bestselling book Papillon (1968) describes his (claimed) successful escape from Devil's Island, and became famous in the 1970s with the film starring Dustin Hoffman and Steve McQueen. Devil’s Island features in many other books and films.

The islands are overgrown with trees, with cells not unlike the temples at Angkor in Cambodia, and lush foliage engulfing the rusting iron grilles. Walk the signed trails, but do not swim as the waters are shark infested. In 1965 the French government transferred responsibility of most of the islands to the Guiana Space Centre, which has restored buildings classified as historical monuments. The islands are under the trajectory of the space rockets launched eastward toward the sea, and must be evacuated during each launch. The islands host a variety of measurement apparatus for space launches. Cruise liners stop by where once the prison ships landed their cargos of hardened criminals.
