Ullapool is a small village on the shores of Loch Broom in the Highlands of Scotland, about an hour north of Inverness. It is the largest settlement for many miles around, and is a major tourist destination of Scotland. The North Atlantic Drift passes by Ullapool, bringing mild temperatures. The town of 1500 with its white houses is neatly set out along the shores of the Loch, with colourful boats in its small fishing marina, and holiday camping ground along the water front. Nearby the pier is the small Ullapool Museum and Visitor Centre, originally one of the 32 Thomas Telford designed churches in the highlands and Hebrides.

The village itself was founded in 1788 as a herring port, and designed by Thomas Telford, a prolific civil engineer, architect and poet responsible for many of the bridges, roads and buildings in Scotland. (His grave is in Westminster Abbey.) The harbour is still used as a fishing port, yacht haven, and ferry port to the Hebrides. Many of the key discoveries of the Victorian era relating to the development of the theory of plate tectonics were made in this area, and there are still regular international geological conferences. (Ullapool was the site of a meteor impact leaving an underwater crater 10km across.)

Ullapool is the gateway to the Northern Highlands. The village is a great base for walkers, wild-life enthusiasts and holiday-makers. The landscape features rugged mountains, easily viewed from the highway passing through the village if one prefers not to walk. Ullapool is also one of the most 'happening' places in the highlands, with a number of annual festivals, and frequent live concerts by the best musical talents of the highlands.
