The island of Rùm is the largest of the Small Isles of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland. It is about 10km square. The island’s heritage dates back to the earliest occupation in Scotland. It was bought by the Scottish Natural Heritage in 1957 and is one of Scotland’s finest Natural Reserves. With a population of just thirty people, it has become a haven for a great variety of birds and animals, and also provides a superb opportunity for detailed research into red deer and reintroduced white-tailed sea eagles.

The village of Kinloch on the east side has a few buildings for its population of around two dozen, and a small landing beach. Facing the beach, and of special interest to all visitors, is the luxurious Kinloch Castle, built by the island’s inherited owner Sir George Bullough in 1900. Tours of the magnificent castle reveal its fascinating historical background, its elaborate Great Hall, and perhaps most importantly, the superb furniture and fittings (including a Steinway piano and an amazing organ), that provide a perfect time capsule of Edwardian life. Visitors also appreciate the small art gallery at the Bistro at the Castle that sells original artwork.

The island is a great place for taking a guided walk, or following the simple nature trails laid out around the village of Kinloch. Evidence of former occupants dating from pre-history, Norse rule, medieval Scots habitation, and various farming settlements and nine hamlets, are evident – a total of 7 nationally important ancient monument sites. You may also visit Bullough’s unusual Greek-style family Mausoleum at Harris on the south coast. Rùm is also known as the ‘Forbidden Island’, due to its magnificent mountains that are the remains of a huge ancient volcano.
