‘L’-shaped Rathlin Island lies off the NW coast of Northern Ireland, just 23 km west of Scotland across the Irish Sea, and 8km north of Ireland mainland. It is part of the United Kingdom. Its population is about 100 inhabitants. Rathlin Island is home to large numbers of seabirds (and hence bird-watchers). The cliffs overlooking the sea are impressive. A cave here is said to be the one where Robert the Bruce of Scotland watched the famous spider spin its web. Historically the island has seen more than its fair share of slaughter. And here Marconi set up his first commercial wireless telegraphy link to the Irish mainland.

Mini-bus tours and bicycles are the means of travel for visitors. As stated, seabirds and cliffs are the main attractions. Watch a colony of seals from the ferry terminal. This is a no-rush island where visitors are given to relaxation and receive a friendly welcome. Visit the RSPB Seabird Centre, open 7 days from 10am to 4pm, a 90-minute walk from the harbour. Binoculars are available at no charge, buy your souvenirs, snacks, tea and coffee.
