The great waterfront city of Portsmouth is located on Portsea Island on the southern coast of England. It is the UK's only island city. Fast becoming Britain’s favourite waterfront destination, it has an irresistible mix of history and heritage, shopping, lively arts as well as great restaurants and bars. A significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth is home to the world's oldest dry dock still in use. The most fortified in Europe with a network of forts circling the city, most of Portsmouth's tourist attractions are related to its naval history. A visit to the Historic Dockyard where are found: the D-Day museum, Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the remains of Henry VIII's flagship - the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior - Britain's first iron-clad steamship - and the Royal Naval Museum, is an absolute must.

The Southsea castle built in the Tudor era and home to a small museum, and much of the seafront defences up to the Round Tower - one of the oldest permanent fortifications - are open to the public. The Royal Marines Museum situated at the seafront at Southsea is also well worth a visit. A variety of museums are also favourite attractions and these include: the City Museum that provides the story of Portsmouth, the Natural History Museum with displays of the wildlife of past and present eras, while the Historic Dockyard provide a real journey through time. For literature buffs, Charles Dicken’s Birthplace Museum is a ‘must-see’, while shoppers will delight in the fantastic Gunwharf Quays with its numerous designer outlets.

Then there’s the Eastney Beam Engine House, the Blue Reef Aquarium considered to be the ultimate undersea safari, and everyone visits Britain’s best viewing tower, the Spinnaker Tower, for its superb views. St John’s Roman Catholic Cathedral with its wooden vaulted ceilings and the Southsea Splash Pool that is ideal for children aged eight and under are both popular attractions. From the pomp and ceremony of its proud naval heritage, to towering world-class visitor attractions, great places to eat and miles and miles of beautiful seafront, Portsmouth offers something for absolutely everyone.
