Newhaven (‘New Harbour’) is a district in the City of Edinburgh, Scotland. Its port lies on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth (‘Estuary of the River Forth’), a fjord that opens to the North Sea. The town was originally established in 1504 to be a ship-building port for King James IV. Today it retains its character as a fishing village, with distinctive lighthouse (1869), fishmarket, and of special mention Victoria Primary School, established in the 1840s, an historic building in Newhaven Main Street. See The Royal Yacht Britannia, decommissioned in 1997, is berthed at Ocean Terminal.

The port is a few kilometres from the heart of Edinburgh, so most visitors head straight to the Scottish capital. Edinburgh is the location of Scotland’s Parliament, Castle, National Museum, Library, Gallery and Church Assembly. Scotland has a rich history of science and engineering (Napier, James Maxwell, Alexander Bell, Max Born, Charles Darwin, James Hutton, Peter Higgs, (also Sean Connery and numerous famed authors); learn about them in the museums. Interestingly, the city’s growth in the 17th C resulted in up-to 15-storey buildings, the first of modern-day sky-scrapers! Today, its economy is based mainly on financial services, scientific research, higher education, and tourism. Edinburgh Castle perches on top of a rocky crag, a must-see site

The city's historical and cultural attractions have made it the United Kingdom's second most popular tourist destination after London. Visitor numbers are augmented around August each year during the Edinburgh Festivals, which attracts 4.4 million visitors. Historic sites in Edinburgh also include Holyrood Palace, the churches of St. Giles, Greyfriars and the Canongate, and the extensive Georgian New Town, built in the 18th century. Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Edinburgh Zoo, covering 82 acres on Corstorphine Hill, is the second most popular paid tourist attraction in Scotland.
