Greencastle lies at the northernmost tip of Ireland in County Donegal, the Republic of Ireland. It is situated on the west bank of Lough Foyle, the estuary of the River Foyle. (On the east bank is Northern Ireland, UK.) Greencastle is a commercial fishing port. As fishing has declined, the town is a typical Donegal holiday village. Its name derives from the ruins of 14thC Anglo-Norman Northburgh Castle, 500m from the port. Adjacent to the castle is a Martello fort built to stop Napoleon. Cruise ships tender to the port.

A short walk takes you to the highly recommended Inishowen Maritime Museum & Planetarium, with displays of local history, and a beautiful tearoom. Visitors must call in at the Ferryport Bar for a friendly chat and a Guinness. And a short walk takes you to the Greencastle Golf Club. Drive through the beautiful Donegal countryside; perhaps 7km north to Kinnagoe Bay beach. A 15-minute ferry runs from Greencastle across the Lough to Northern Ireland, a beautiful trip in itself, and 30km along the coast is the famous Giant’s Causeway.

About 35 km south is the old city of Londonderry (Derry), one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe. From this one-mile promenade view the city, noted for its collection of late Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian buildings. There are many museums and sites of interest in and around the city. The city’s history with the civil rights movement in the 1970s is with the Hands Across the Divide sculpture and the perpetual Peace Flame Monument.
