Greenwich Pier on the River Thames in the London borough of Greenwich, UK, is upstream from the London Barrage, and downstream from the heart of London. The name says you are within walking distance of the historic Royal Observatory, Greenwich (now a museum), marking zero degrees longitude, where you can be photographed with one foot in the Eastern hemisphere and one foot in the Western hemisphere. View historic astronomic and navigational tools vital to Britain’s ships since 1675, railways since 1847, and the Prime Meridian since 1884. Greenwich Mean Time is now superseded by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). On the wall of the Royal Observatory are British standard lengths for feet and inches.

Greenwich is a popular tourist destination in London and now a World Heritage Site. The pier is immediately adjacent to the restored clipper ship Cutty Sark (built 1869; 6 weeks to sail Australia to London), the Greenwich Hospital, Christopher Wren’s Old Royal Naval College, the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Park, the Royal Naval College, and central Greenwich with its covered market and shops. There’s the Greenwich foot tunnel beneath the Thames at the Cutty Sark site. Just walk around these sites in SE London along with an international crowd of sight-seers.

The birthplace of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, Greenwich Town is dominated by Georgian and Victorian architecture, and home to Greenwich Market (since the 14th C). Other places of interest are Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre, Greenwich Heritage Centre, Greenwich Theatre (for family shows), London’s only public planetarium, and the University of Greenwich with the Trinity College of Music. There are innumerable eating places around town. Drop in to Mr. Humbug (for sweets), and the Fan Museum (with the world’s best collection of fans). Rail, bus and river transport takes you to the heart of London.
