Tournus is a town in the Burgundy region of eastern France, located on the east bank of the Saône River, between Dijon and Lyon. An ancient Roman garrison was built here on the banks of the Saône, and Tournus became an important religious centre under the influence of the very striking Abbey of Saint-Philibert which, with its interesting crypt, mosaics, and cloisters, is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. The early 11th C church of St Philibert that once belonged to the Abbey is also a main attraction due to the fact that it has square chapels, a crypt, as well as a nave that is supported on tall cylindrical columns and is roofed with barrel vaulting.

Other well-known tourist destinations include: the 17th century hospital and apothecary, along with the Hôtel-Dieu de Tournus which is classified a historical monument. The adjoining Greuze de Tournus Museum is home to a diverse array of collections, such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, as well as many archaeological finds. Then there’s the Musée du vélo Michel Grezaud - Pedal Power heaven, with an amazing collection of bicycles, right back to the original bone-shakers. Not only that, but there are also many interesting articles to do with cycling. For the adventurous there is a selection of bicycles to ride.

Apart from being one of the most important examples of monastic centres in France, it is wise, if time permits, to visit the Mâconnais hillsides to absorb the pleasant rustic setting, and enjoy the gentle climate. Stone quarries are found in the area, as are vineyards that produce fine wines. So take the time to taste the local cuisine and wines at one of the pleasant restaurants, such as the Restaurant Greuze located near the Abbey, which collected a Michelin star in 2007.
