Saint Raphaël is a resort town of SE France, on the Mediterranean Sea in the Côte d'Azur. It is situated between Cannes and Saint Tropez and, has a charming location on the north side of the Gulf of Fréjus at the foot of the Esterel range. It is surrounded by spectacular views, sandy beaches, marinas, good shopping, and lots of dining possibilities. In the ‘village district’ or old town in the heart of the town, its 12th century Templar church with its tower for the protection against pirates, and the Museum of Underwater Archaeology with its notable collection of artefacts from ancient wrecks, are both well known tourist attractions.

Parallel to the shore runs the Promenade René-Coty, which is beautifully laid out and extremely popular in season. From here and also from the pleasant avenue de Gaulle there is a good view of the strange rock formations, the Lion de Terre (Lion of the Land) and Lion de Mer (Lion of the Sea). The town is full of fine old villas from the 18th and 19th centuries. The beaches stretch between the old port in the town centre and the newer Port Santa Lucia, with opportunities for every kind of water sport including diving amongst ancient ship wrecks, as well as the cave of Miro.

The ‘golden island’ a private island that lies just across from where passengers disembark, has a lot of tourist appeal due to an amazing medieval tower built on solid red rock. Other attractions include: Les Bains de Cleopatre, St Peter’s church and possibly a boat trip to St Tropez. Also be sure to take the opportunity to taste delightful French, Moroccan and provincial dishes at the numerous ‘cute’ restaurants.
