Cruises visiting Lorient & all Lorient cruises for  2019-2020

Surrounded by the sea, Lorient offers a wide range of fresh sea food, especially mussels and oysters. One of the biggest attractions at Lorient is the German submarine base that remains here from WWII. The base was first extended by the French Navy and used for nuclear submarines. Later it became a tourist attraction, and you can now visit it as a museum that is home to a real French Navy submarine. There is something for everyone in the area around Lorient including the Scorff and Blavet Valleys, picturesque countryside, traditional ports, villages and beaches.

Among the highlights are the Gavres peninsula, the picturesque riverside setting for the villages of Honnebont and Pont Scorff, and the beaches of the Ploemeur and Larmor regions on the coast to the west of Lorient. The Île de Groix is an island just off the coast from Lorient and popular with visitors. Also view some interesting examples of 20th century contemporary architecture such as: the Chamber of Commerce (1920s art-deco style); the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Victoire; the residential block called the 'Banana' (1950s); the Town Hall and apartment block called the 'Echasses' (1960s), and the Youth Hostel (1970s).

More recent very contemporary additions are the Grand Theatre and its fountain, and the Cité de la Voile. Of interest to many families is taking a tour of Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly, a specialty museum dealing with sailing. Highly recommended for children and adults, there is a highly interactive part that lets you try some basic manoeuvres on the helms and sails. It’s great for those who want to learn a bit more about sailing, and also for a rainy day. Activities such as water skiing and jet skiing, as well as popular boat tours, are all very popular.
