San Sebastian is a city and municipality located in the north of Spain, on the coast of the Bay of Biscay and 20 km south of the French border. The first sight of the shimmering scallop-shaped bay, with its crescents of golden sand and turquoise waves, is most impressive. As it is also in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, the local cuisine is unrivalled. San Sebastian boasts one of the best in-city beaches in Europe, which draws surfers and sunbathers in abundance, and is located next to major historical buildings and churches. A spruced-up seaside promenade, a renovated museum, and a culinary school all add to the city’s attractions.

Be sure to ride the rumbling funicular to the summit and the Mount Igueldo Tower, as the claim is that it offers the best views in the world. Another popular option is to visit Kukuxumusu, or Parte Vieja, where one can purchase the most amazing goofy cartoons, playful and original graphic designs, slapped on everything from T-shirts to tote bags. There is also the opportunity to revisit childhood at the ancient amusement park. To taste some excellent Basque cuisine, find the simple staircase that descends to the sunny-walled restaurant Bodegon Alejandro.
