Luxor is the premier travel destination in Upper (southern) Egypt and the Nile Valley. Luxor has much to offer the traveller, from vast temples to ancient royal tombs, travelling through spectacular desert and river scenery, as well as a bustling modern life. Luxor has often been called the world's greatest open air museum, as indeed it is, and much more. The number and preservation of the monuments in the Luxor area are unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Actually, what most people think of as Luxor is really three different areas, consisting of the city of Luxor on the east side of the Nile, the town of Karnak just north of Luxor, and Thebes which is on the west side of the Nile across from Luxor.

A tour of the west bank takes visitors back into Egypt’s ancient history at the Valley of the Kings where tombs, the Necroolis of ancient Thebes, and the temple at Hatshepsut can be visited. The two giant monuments, the Colossi of Memmon, are also amazing. On the east bank are two very impressive temples: the temple of Karnak, with its legacy of many pharaohs in its complex, as well as the Luxor temple. Some visitors travel from Luxor to Dendara to see the well-preserved Temple of Hathor, the Temple of Isis, and the Coptic Basilica.

Also on offer is the opportunity to take a hot-air balloon flight over the Nile River's west bank for unbeatable views of Luxor's famous temples. Perhaps of greatest interest is the controversial tourist development that aims to transform Luxor into a vast open-air museum. Of special importance is the project to unearth and restore the 2.7-kilometre-long Avenue of Sphinxes that once linked Luxor and the Karnak temples. Over a thousand sphinx statues that once lined the road are now being excavated. As this started in 2004, all are amazed at its progress.
