Pärnu is located in SW Estonia on the coast of Pärnu Bay, an inlet of the Gulf of Riga in the Baltic Sea. Lying on the Pärnu River, it is a popular holiday resort with its two kilometre beach, water parks, spas and rehabilitation centres, hotels, conference and concert venues, golf courses and tennis courts, restaurants and pubs. By area it is the biggest town in Estonia. Since 1996 Pärnu has been known as Estonia's Summer Capital. The majority of the tourists in Pärnu are Finns, Swedes and Russians. Pärnu’s tree-lined streets, churches, medieval architecture and colourful buildings catch the eyes of visitors. Look out for the 15th C Red Tower.

On approaching Pärnu from the sea, one enters the river between two stone walls extending 1.5 km from the river mouth. Built between 1863 and 1864, they are atop the remains of a 17th C seawall ordered by Catherine the Great of Russia. Local legend says that if a couple holds hands while journeying along the wall and kisses at its endpoint, they’ll remain together forever. But be careful, the wall is submerged at high tide. The beautiful beach promenade is ideal for walking, cycling and roller skating, with playgrounds, water fountains and play areas for children. The adventurous try water skiing, yachting, canoeing and kayaking down the Pärnu river to the open sea.

Visit the Russian Farmyard, a small piece of Russian culture located in an Estonian farm with a long and interesting history. You will see Russian folk costumes from various regions, traditional household tools and a collection of samovars, an authentic Russian oven, and hohloma handicraft, which is also called hand-made gold. Also, 40 minutes out of town, is Soomaa National Park, one of Estonia’s most beautiful parks. Notable past residents include Gustav Fabergé the jeweller and David Oistrakh the violinist.
