Isla de la Plata, one of the hidden places of Ecuador, is a small island that lies off the coast NW of Puerto Lopez. It was so named when the pirate Francis Drake ostensibly robbed treasure from Spanish ships and hid it on the island. According to legend, much of the treasure is still hidden on the island. Currently becoming well known as the poor man’s Galápagos, it has long been called ‘Silver Island”. It is part of the Machalilla National Park, and is famous for its large diversity of animal species.

Take a tour on one of the hiking trails - one is a three hour walk and the other is a five hour walk - and you will see many species similar to the ones found in the Galápagos. For example, several species of booby, including the Blue-footed booby, Red-footed booby, and the Nazca booby are found here. Additionally, the South American sea lion is also found here, while dolphins, like the Pantropical spotted dolphin, can be found in the water near the island. Many visitors enjoy some relaxed snorkelling as the tropical fish are impressive. Whales are seen from June to September.

In ancient times De la Plata Island was a centre for religious worship of the Ecuadorian prehistoric cultures. The land area is considered one of the most important sites for bird watching in the world. De la Plata Island is important for eco-tourism as it counts with marine birds such as Blue, Red Footed and Masked Boobies, Frigate Birds, Pelicans, Tropical birds and Albatross. Puerto Lopez, a fisher-man's village within the Machalilla Natural Park, is the starting point of tourist operations in the area.
