The visitor site Las Bachas is located in northern part of Santa Cruz Island. It consists of two beaches that have a combined length of about 1 km. The visitor site includes the landing beach, and the beach continues to the remains of a floating dock abandoned by American soldiers in World War II. In fact, “bachas” is a poor pronunciation of “barges,” two of which were wrecked offshore at that time. The locals mispronounced the name and it stuck. It is a good place to see flamingos, as well as migratory and aquatic birds. The predominant vegetation is on the coastal zone.

It represents one of the main nesting sites of the sea turtles, the Galápagos Green Turtle that nest in the sand dunes, so be careful not to step on turtle nests. If the timing is appropriate it is a delight to see local youths watching the birth sites to assure safe passage of the babies to the ocean. The pond behind the first beach usually has some flamingos, Common Stilts, White-Cheeked Pintail ducks and is an excellent place to observe migratory birds. The lagoon must be approached in silence, as these birds are nervous and are easily disturbed.

The gentle surf makes it ideal for swimming, and as the white sand is interspersed with rocks, these are the areas for safe snorkelling. Be on the lookout for Great Blue Herons, Yellow Warblers (usually hidden in trees), Brown Pelicans (resting on the rocks), and the brightly coloured Sally Lightfoot Crabs. Las Bachas is a very popular site for snorkelling, swimming and beachcombing. However, the beautiful beaches are also ideal for families to relax, and enjoy the tranquility. Be sure to bring a camera, as the variety of natural sites make this a great opportunity for delightful photos.
